Those scenes give the audience a chance to relax and recover before the filmmakers unleash a full force attack. Many home invasion films have slower, emotional transition moments. It’ll grab you by the throat and won’t let go. It gets your blood pumping and refuses to let up. It’s extremely unrelenting and unnerving. There’s a seriously brooding and ominous undercurrent to it. Technically it’s labeled a crime thriller However, the film is obviously geared towards horror fans. This is one of those rare horror gems that remains buried under the rubble. When three intruders take a family hostage in their own home, it’s up to their sixteen year old daughter to fight back and exact revenge.

It stars Stephanie Jones, Muse Watson, Michael McCleery, Mary Kathleen Gordon, Coryanne Sennett and Anthony Nicosia. If I Die Before I Wake is a 1998 horror thriller is written and directed by Brian Katkin. What would you do if you woke up in the middle of the night and someone was breaking into your house? Would you freeze in fear? Do you think you’d have what it takes to fight back and protect what’s rightfully yours? It’s ultimately a mixed bag, but I would give the film a marginal recommendation if you’re a fan of the principal cast.“If I Die Before I Wake” is an underrated, low budget indie horror gem worth seeking out - one that’s truly scary, heart-pounding, and highly effective. That said, I did appreciate Compound Fracture‘s final moments, which reject the smirking cynicism that horror is sometimes notorious for. The lead-up was strong enough to keep me on the hook, but the character-based tension dissolves to give genre fans the type of showdown that feels pulled from a lesser film. I had a hard time following the characters’ plan to vanquish Mears’ violent demon, and the climactic fight scene is a collection of confounding edits and ineffective jump scares. Unfortunately, the occult elements that drive the last 30 minutes render the story a muddle. Like I said, the intriguing build-up in getting to know these characters is where Compound Fracture soars. Mane, meanwhile, continues to mine his intimidating stature in a more nuanced, dramatic way. Watson straddles the line between occult believer and possible dementia case, and gives a convincing performance. Mears is appropriately menacing, especially in the film’s black-and-white flashbacks. Geerlings’ maternal presence reminded me of Vera Farmiga in The Conjuring films. As Gary’s current wife, Leslie Easterbrook evokes a sense of patience and calm, the inverse of her Devil’s Rejects character (she also looks a bit like latter-day Jane Fonda here). I enjoyed the character interaction early on, as we get a feel for everyone’s emotions and motivations.

Whereas Penance Lane was about earthbound evil, Compound Fracture puts some familiar genre faces within a story where tenuous family relations commingle with the supernatural.

Now, the prolific actor is back with Compound Fracture. In addition to its more overt horror elements, it showed that Mane could depict a flawed character with noble traits. Does the new supernatural horror Compound Fracture make good use of these genre titans?Įarlier this year, I had a mostly favorable reaction to Penance Lane, which starred Tyler Mane as a drifter drawn to a ramshackle house, and the secrets contained within. By Jonathan Weidler 2 years ago Tyler Mane and Derek Mears have played iconic slashers.
